THE DILEMMA OF A TRILINGUAL MIND

THE DILEMMA OF A TRILINGUAL MIND

I'm Jing Wang, the owner of a trilingual mind. Here is a brief outline of the journey that shaped that mind:

  • Age 0-5: I was born in Xi'an, a historical city in China which was the capital for more than ten dynasties. I lived there until I was five years old.

  • Age 5-12: I lived in Japan, first in Sapporo, and then in Tokyo, then moved to Kanagawa Prefecture (next to Tokyo), and then back to Tokyo. I ended up studying at four different primary schools as a result of the moves.

  • Age 12-19: I was back at my hometown Xi'an in China, and went to secondary school there.

  • Age 19-22: I moved to the UK and read an undergraduate degree in Economics and Management at Oxford University.

  • Age 22+: I started my career in London after my degree and lived here ever since. Upon graduation, I joined Deloitte and qualified as a Chartered Tax Advisor. I then worked at KPMG before starting a business in education consulting.

Unlike most people, I don't have a language that I could always speak fluently. For example, at the age of 12, my Japanese was like a native, but Chinese was very poor.

However, I am fluent in English, Chinese and Japanese and use all three languages for work. I think in three languages.

Now that I've done a brief introduction of myself, I would like to share the dilemma of my trilingual mind through little episodes and anecdotes.
